There are 3 MMOGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Games) set to be released this quarter: namely Perfect World from Level Up!, Granado Espada by IPVG and Lineage 2 by AMDG. I have spent quite some time with all games and here are my impressions:

I would’ve played Lineage 2 PH if only someone bothered to give me an install cd/dvd. I did play at the US servers for a couple of months and i hated the grind and the overall travel time. Great content due to numerous patches over the years though (its more than 2 years old, people…). Props to the Dark Elf Model.

Granado Espada is a great looking game but i basically went from 1-20 without being attached to my characters. Blame the “bot” feature for this. I love the artistic style and period though. Great improvements over the CBT although i still feel it a bit lacking in the charm department.

Perfect World still has some bugs it needs to fix and some clarifications to implement but i wasted enough with time its face creator. Seriously, With 10 characters per server, this can take a while. I wish it were available on DVD though…

How about you? What local MMO are you playing?

Anybody else see those awesome Assassin’s Creed gameplay videos at E3? No, not the ones with hottie dev Jade Reynolds, but the ones where protagonist Altair moves throughout 12th century Jerusalem. First Altair dives off a building onto a haystack, then casually walks with citizens. He deftly avoids a barricade by throwing a soldier off a roof to set off a distraction and uses an overarching beam to hang on and flip himself to the other side of the barricade. People also notice you while you walk and move, like when you start to climb a building. You can hear them saying “What is he doing?” or “he’s trying to get himself killed”. A new kind of AI or just longer code?

When you run the streets, people turn around and look at you just like in real life. Contextually, it does make sense. Try running in a crowded place, im sure you might get some stares as well as a few passing remarks about what the hell are you doing. It makes the world more believable, basically.

Imagine your favorite game with this kind of AI. Draw out a gun/bazooka/big ass sword in-game in a public place and every character in sight panics and looks for cover. Or take your favorite RPG where characters react to what you carry in your inventory or to what you’re wearing.

Is this the future of gaming? Get back to me when Assassin’s Creed ships in a couple of months….

Local game publishers need to earn somehow from locally published games. The amount of money that goes into development, management, support and marketing these games is really no joke. We currently have two game models: One is Free to Play, where you actually can play the game for free but premium items are bought in an item mall, and Two is via Pay to Play where you actually pay for gametime similar to World of Warcraft’s (and others) subscription based model. Of course you have Guild Wars where you pay for the boxed game but don’t pay anything for gametime and doesn’t have an item mall. While GW’s approach is unique, it’s not the only alternative payment method its publisher NCSoft has devised.

NCSoft has at least 2 games in the pipeline which uses a variation of the Free to Play Model, but instead of buying items in an item mall players actually get a premium version of the game. Take Dungeon Runners for example, its one of the best Diablo clones out there, DR allows players to play the game for free but you only get to equip the strongest rarities only if you pay a small fee of 5usd a month. NCSoft calls these “micropayments”. Other perks are login priority, bigger inventory, and other cool stuff. The good thing about this is that the amount is small enough and even if you dont pay the monthly premium you still can play the game.

Sounds good to me, I wonder if and when this will be implemented locally…

Yuga posted that the prices of quad cores have gone down by half. The question im asking myself now is that: is it worth going to quad core right here and now? Don’t get me wrong, slashing prices almost always is in the best interest of the consumers but if you’re someone who has been thinking of buying a new rig, is it worth jumping on the quad core bandwagon ?

Observations: Quad core ain’t doing squat for most new PC games (which aren’t multi CPU aware, yet) . Hell, my Core 2 duos aren’t being used efficiently in my MMO’s either. Multiple cores are boon for multitaskers though. I usually have my browser with multiple tabs with adobe flash running, image editor, media player on while playing my fave games on without a performance hit. Just make sure you’ve got enough RAM to feed your procs.

Ok, so should you upgrade?

If you’ve got a old pentium 3 pc, upgrade NOW. As in run to your friendly neighborhood PC shop and get one of these babies and slap it onto a new rig setup. Thank me later…

If you’ve got an old Pentium 4 (2 years or more), then it depends on what you wanna do with your PC. If your old PC is sluggish, make sure you have 1GB of ram installed. It may also be a good time to reformat that drive. I have a first gen 2.4Ghz p4 and an athlon xp 2500 still running smoothly on Windows XP, even while gaming.

Pentium 4 3.0′s and later – Probably wanna upgrade if you want to push those framerates on those games (although pair your proc with a good Videocard). or for faster video encoding for apps that use multi cores.

Dual Cores – Either you need the extra cores for server processing duties or you have lots of cash to blow. or you want faster video encoding (assuming your application supports 4 cores).

Remember: Get at least 1GB of ram of the fastest memory clockspeed your mobo supports. If you can afford it, get 2GB or more. Especially if you’re gonna use Windows Vista.

Gamers!

This is the Ultimate Bring Me Event you’ve all been waiting for!

This big event is divided into two parts, the Gold Rush Bring Me Event (this week’s surprise in-game event) and the Grand Bring Me Event (scheduled July 10 – July 17, 2007).

GOLD RUSH BRING ME EVENT

Mechanics:

    * A GM will announce in-game a set of items for the players to hunt.
* Prize: 15M Golds
* In this event every second counts, there will be corresponding gold deductions for every 15 minutes:
o first 15 minutes = 15M Golds
o 16-30 minutes = 10M Golds
o 31 minutes-1 hour = 5M Golds

GRAND BRING ME EVENT

Mechanics:

    * A GM will announce an item that the players will hunt. For this event, all gamers are required to hunt all types of rings.
* The players must collect all types of rings with 8 different specs each.

* The players will be given 7 days to complete all types of rings.
* There will be three (3) winners in this event.
* Prize: Chaos Ring 2 pcs
Note: Chaos Ring looks similar with Valento Ring, the difference is the color (Gold) and this ring comes with higher statistics. Item can be traded, can be dropped, and can be sold to an NPC Shop. Chaos Ring specs will depend on the winner’s character .

I’m currently reviewing a Nokia 5700 for Mobile Philippines. And one of the first things I check out on a new phone are the pre-installed games.

Marble Cannon is a Zuma clone of no consequence. The other game, City Bloxx, is highly addictive for some reason. Simplify SimCity into a challenge of attaining the highest population. Put in an action element that requires great hand-eye coordination. This is the formula for City Bloxx.

Basically, you’re given a 5×5 city grid with empty blocks to populate with buildings of different sizes and population capacities. The more advanced structures become available as your progress, and need to be placed adjacent to the more basic ones. When you pick a building type, the game shifts to the tower stacking mode.

Here you’re a crane operator, dropping the building’s parts on the foundation one-by-one, and timing your release properly for higher points and population capacity. This is the really addicting part, as you find yourself doing buildings over and over again just to stack all the pieces perfectly. And stacking every piece perfectly provides a rare kind of satisfaction.

As you try to complete taller structures, the game gets harder, as you have to deal with the swaying common in high towers. Release at the wrong time, you’ll miss the building stack and lose one of your three tries to complete the tower (which resets every time you build a new tower). Even worse, missing badly might cause some of your previously stacked blocks to fall down.

So, if you use a Symbian Series 60 smartphone (like the aforementioned 5700), get yourself a copy of City Bloxx. It’s an engrossing time-waster, and it lets you pick up where you left off. Eventually the action will become repetitive, and you might lose patience as you build your city into a metropolis through your fine crane-operating skills, but City Bloxx gets a four out of five from yours truly.
