GameFlood for gamers: Get your mod fix here
Feb 3rd
Turbosquid, the people behind Gmax and a community of mod and 3D asset developers, has recently launched the beta version of GameFlood. It’s actually a site where 3D modelers and artists can post their game-related assets and mods in a community setup. What’s great about this for gamers is that this is another repository of mods for most of the popular games.
Maps and mods for games like Half-Life 2, Call of Duty 2, Battlefield 2, Unreal Tournament 2004, CounterStrike source and Oblivion (coming soon) are available.
Anima Wars inspires
Feb 2nd
Well it inspires me at least. The guys over at Anino mobile have done the Philippines proud, coming in as finalists for the 2007 IMGA awards with their game “Anima Wars”. Anima Wars is:
a game played on two levels. On one level it is a Turn-based Strategy game reminiscent to the board game Risk. It allows the player to take control of a horde of warriors in a battle to capture the enemy’s stronghold. On another level it is a hack-and-slash game that allows the player to use champions to slay the enemy’s grunts and/or go head-to-head with another champion. Anima Wars’ Network Game uses a unique “ghosting system” that allows up to 4 players to cooperate, strategize, and fight another 4 players. This game is rendered in an Isometric 3d environment.
Whatever. Check out the video on Youtube and the promotional pics on the IMGA website to get a sneak peek at the game.
Haywire
Feb 1st
The guardians that guild masters have come to trust and depend on for the past few years have suddenly turned rogue! They’ve stolen treasure boxes from royal castle vault and are holing themselves up at Prontera PVP room. King Tristan has declared that the treasure boxes will be free-for-all so long as the valiant adventurers of Midgard eliminate the rogue guardians before they can cause more harm.
But the question still looms… what caused the guardians to go haywire?
Mechanics
1. Hundreds of rogue Master and Archer guardians will be summoned in the Prontera No Limits PVP Room.
2. Anywhere from 100-300 AGIT treasure boxes will be summoned in the Prontera No Limits PVP Room. Treasure Boxes will be FFA and anyone can claim the drops once the treasure boxes are broken.

3rd World Farmer
Feb 1st

Serious games are starting to get some cred in the gamedev world, and I chanced upon this game while reading up on the topic in one of my favorite online magazines, the escapist.
3rd world farmer gives the player an idea what it’s like to try to be a farmer in the developing world, more specifically in the crisis area du jour, Africa. Players choose which crops to plant and livestock to grow, and are annually beset with problems such as guerilla attacks, fires, and corrupt government officials. The high cost of medicine is also a factor, and choosing whether or not to send your child to school is a decision that has far reaching consequences. I ended up losing all my money to raiders, watching my wife die of disease, and planting opium poppies in a desperate attempt to earn extra money.
This game should be even more poignant to the Filipino gamer because to a certain extent, this is the life of a Filipino farmer. Now I know some Filipinos get sensitive about being called “3rd world”, but lets face it, it’s the truth. Those who read this blog, myseld included, are the exception to the Philippine situation, not the norm.
Serious games are made with the hope that it will broaden people’s horizons and open their minds to certain realities that we may not realize even exist. So if you want to know how it feels like to juggle feeding your family, keeping them safe from disease, and fighting off rebels, give 3rd World Farmer a whirl.
